Report

Another match. Another loss. Another thrashing. Team Slayers played well in the first half. We did passing in midfield to the forwards and had few chances at goal. Leading the back line consisting of no. 8, 9 and 11 was Ying Lun who did well in countering Cashew's attack. The first goal came unexpectedly and undeservingly as the low cross from a Cashew corneron the left nutmeged Shawn and Ying Lun before landing perfectly for a Cashew striker to finish it low and hard past goalkeeper Jun Jie. Goal kicks and freekicks were made commonly to the left flank where Slayers' attack were neutralised by a very impressive Cashew right back and centreback captain, Glenn. The over enthusiastic Cashew defence took the ball off left winger Kamil and brought him down with a career threatening tackle that ended Kamil's match early. The injury kept him on the sidelines till the end of the match. In came Left back Andy to replace Kamil and Slayers switched to the traditional 4-4-2. The scoreline remained at 1-0 at halftime. Team Slayers had another blow at half time with cetre back cum left back Reuben leaving for personal reasons. From then on, the team had 0 available subs on the bench.

Second half started lively with Cashew making many attacks and quick counters were launched by Slayers usually with the ever powerful dropkick of goalkeeper Jun Jie. Terence replaced Reuben at left back and Andy shifted to right back. Central midfield partnership of captain Jeremy and attacking minded Jethro remained quite fruitless. However, left midfielder Zi Han held the ball well and passed it to keep the hopes alive for Slayers. Right attacking midfielder Shawn provided little service for strikers Zi Xiang and Kovan. Everything went well until centre back Ying Lun decided to move up to attacking midfield position. The gaping hole was realised by the Cashew attack and great defensive work by Andy and Daryl forced the attempt to a corner. Intelligent play by the Cashew corner taker took it quick and the overwhelming number of Cashew players in the box had the first touch of the curling cross into the box. The then bouncing ball in mid penalty area was half-volleyed beautifully into the top right corner by a Cashew striker giving Slayers keeper no chance at all. Morale dipped drastically in Team Slayers and soon striker Kovan became sick of the lack of service and became a centre back, forcing Daryl to right wing position. The lesser men in defence provided more numbers for attack and it soon paid off for a goal. A throw in by Daryl to Ying Lun gave the no. 11 lots of space to run towards goal and shoot from right penalty box. However, the intended shot shaved the upright and went out for a goalkick. Applause all over the field were heard after long shot king Jeremy shot from nearly half way line just over the bar. He also missed two free kicks earlier on by inches. It was clearly bad luck for Slayers as Kovan whacked the post in the first half. The makeshift defence was totally disorganised. Kovan moved back to attack and that made Daryl to be centre back once again. The back 3 of no. 20, 8 and 5 was not first choice and that soon proved right. A counter attack led by Cashew no. 9, Kavi penetrated the defence easily with 2 other wingers on either flank. A last ditch tackle by Daryl forced a severe cramp in the left calf and right hamstring. The injury allowed Kavi a clear run at goal and he slotted the ball low below the left of Jun Jie. Earlier injuries of Jeremy and Ying Lun did not affect them much. Shawn was forced to be a centreback, but in the end, Slayers' backline conceded another 2 goals from corners in the last 10 minutes. Powerful headers and shots were too much for the overly depended makeshift defence without star defender Chien Ming. Uncreative attack of Slayers made sure we did not score a single goal in our 3rd match. The services of midfield dynano Wei Ian and sublime defending of Lucas's left foot was sorely missed. Full-time, Cashew Cavaliers 5, Team Slayers 0.
