Report

The rain poured down onto Singapore mercilessly islandwide, sparing no squaremetre of exposed land with its flooding ability. Inevitably, Bukit Timah Field, the original venue for the Team Slayers vs Ramozians match was deemed unplayable by the field warden an hour before kick off and the 28 players had to find another location to do the kicking. Referee Tay suggested a pitch at Yishun Ring Road and the desperate players readily agreeed even with the increased cost of booking and travelling time. The downpour eventually reduced to drizzles in the space of 2 hours and the players of both teams invaded the waterlogged pitch, anticipating kick off.

Ramozians are a new team with majority of their players still in lower secondary but displayed strong resistance against a rejuvenated Slayers side. 39. Justin and 31. Zahid made their debut starts for the team and 22. Ryan had a debut appearance as a substitute on the bench. 39. Justin found himself in a weird starting position as a centreback due to the absence of 3 Slayers defenders namely, 5. Chien Ming, 17. Lucas and 19. Reuben. However, the Slayers backline was pretty solid at the beginning with 16. Wei Ian stealing the show with his fantastic tackling, pace and world class standard throw ins.

The Slayers attack was hardworking but seemed lacking of creative ideas to cope with the waterlogged pitch and daring defenders of Ramozians. It took quite awhile for Team Slayers to finally make a break through when 27. Jeremy found himself in some space outside the Ramozians penalty box after a 7. Shawn pass and he tried his luck with a dipping left footed shot on goal. The Ramozians keeper looked to have the shot covered but his centreback tried to clear the shot with a header that cruelly deflected the shot in the opposite direction and into his own net. 1-0 to Slayers.

39. Zahid had a great start to the game with tireless running, giving Ramozians defenders absolutely no space at all, eventaully winning possesion and unselfishly crossing into the centre to feed his first-time strike partner 12. Jun Jie. 9. Christopher and 16. Wei Ian worked well on the left side defending and attacking together. Everything went well for Slayers until a delicate chip through pass from the Ramozians right winger sent their centre forward sprinting for the loose ball behind the Slayers defence. 4. Daryl saw it coming and beat the opposing striker to the ball and was looking to clear it but opted for the option of passing back to his goalkeeper 14. Ting Soon who was free in the penalty box. It was a horrendous error by the defender as the ball stopped in a puddle of water before it could reach 14. Ting Soon and the Ramozians striker was first to react, rounding the stranded Slayers keeper and hitting a curling shot past 4. Daryl who was on the goal line for a dramatic equalizer. 1-1.

Slayers were dejected but never lost motivation to score more goals. Almost immediately after conceding a goal, Slayers hit back at Ramozians as 9. Christopher made a simple pass to 11. Ying Lun on the left who seemed to make an obvious option of crossing the ball into the box but ended up chipping the ball over the Ramozians keeper who was slightly off his line. The Slayers midfielder later admitted it was unintentional and hardly celebrated his goal. 2-1.

11. Ying Lun eventually subbed off for 15. Bo Yang who came on to take the place of 10. Zi Xiang at centreback who was more of a centre midfielder moving up one time too often. 15. Bo Yang seemed in for a disatrous game upon coming on the pitch when he picked up a yellow card just minutes later for a two-footed challenge on the Ramozians right winger who broke free down the flank. Just seconds later, a long ball straight down the heart of Slayers defence was chased by 15. Bo Yang who controlled the ball and made another back pass to 14. Ting Soon who picked the ball up as he thought it was a through ball made by a Ramozians player. The ref blew for an indirect freekick just inside the penalty box. Many were shocked with the confidence of the Slayers forwards as there were only 4 people in the wall and 2 post men defending the set piece. 4 forwards remain upfront. Ramozians involved 2 people in the situation with one tapper and the other blasting the ball over the bar. A waste of the situation.

A goal kick by 15. Bo Yang sent 12. Jun Jie and 27. Jeremy chasing after the ball but the attack failed when the Ramozian centreback stepped in to clear the danger and the half ended with muddied backs and tired forwards.

The second half started with Slayers attacking all out and inevitably, goals came almost at an instance. A great shot by 11. Ying Lun at the edge of the penalty box was parried by the Ramozians keeper to his left where a gleeful 12. Jun Jie had the simplest of tap ins on the rebound. The striker broke away to celebrate his 2nd goal in 2 games. 3-1. That was not when the goals stopped. A goalkick by the Ramozians keeper was sent straight to 27. Jeremy where he failed to control the ball but 10. Zi Xiang got behind the captain and held the ball while the former made an intelligent run only for the impressive striker to spot him out and weighed a perfect through pass for him to pounce on and go one on one with the keeper after evading 2 defenders and a clever cut back shot was enough to send the ball trickling to the back of the net. 4-1.

The Slayers backline was almost non-existent midway through the 2nd half with only 4. Daryl staying back while 15. Bo Yang and 16. Wei Ian pushed up to midfield and 7. Shawn was playing a more defensive role. 9. Christopher found a worthy opponent to stop him from wrecking havoc down the left and it was none other than the water logged pitch he was playing on. However, the waterlogged pitch did not stop 11. Ying Lun from adding one more goal to his tally when a 12. Jun Jie pass found him in minimal space in the penalty box but the midfielder pushed the ball aside and drove the ball into the back of the net past the miserable keeper. 5-1.

10. Zi Xiang lived up to his reputation of being the most clinical in the 1 year old team and blasted a low drive from the edge of the box with his trusty left foot after cutting in from the right flank and wrong footing the Ramozians keeper. It seemed that simple for the hitman who has scored 5 goals so far.

13. Benedict made his second official appearance and is starting to establish his reputation as a supersub. After leaving the bench and coming on as a right winger, the new man showed some superb touches and runs that almost got him a goal from the edge of the box with a shot that went wide of the post. However, the no. 13 got a second chance and did not let the team down after 12. Jun Jie did well to pass the ball to him on the right side of the penalty box and he calmly placed the shot into the net with the keeper sprawling on the ground. 7-1.

The score was getting more and more emphatic but no one could write off the Ramozians attack. An attack down their left flank seemed very threatening and a fantatic run from the left winger left 4. Daryl, the last man no choice but to take no prisoners and take both the man and the ball out to end the attack prematurely.

A corner on the right was sent in irresitably for 7. Shawn who was free of marking and he made a rare attacking header that was wide of the post. Full marks for the effort. Minutes later, a freekick 5 metres from the edge of the box was worked brilliantly involving 13. Benedict, 11. Ying Lun and 15. Bo Yang. A tap by 13. Benedict was dummied by 11. Ying Lun who let the ball roll to the waiting 15. Bo Yang who sent a blisterring drive straight into the wall.

3. Andy and 22. Ryan came on as late substitutes with the former providing some cover at the back while the latter patrolling the left flank. 3. Andy did well in certain occasions clearing the ball just at the centre circle before the Ramozians could gain any momentum for an attack. 22. Ryan showed some impressive touches and clever play with captain 27. Jeremy, 7. Shawn and 9. Christopher, linking play well with midfield and attack. The debutant did not shrug off his defensive duties with several runs back to help out out of position 16. Wei Ian at times.

An occasion that comfirmed the out of positioned leftback 16. Wei Ian was when he stuck out both arms to block a chip through to a Ramozians striker behind him and was brandished a yellow card for deliberate handball. Another yellow card was shown when a two-footed challenge on 7. Shawn who was making one of the many burst into midfield was made recklessly by the burly Ramozian midfielder.

31. Zahid came back on the pitch and a moment of brilliance by the new signing capped an impressive debut for him. The ball came to him with acres of space on the right flank and the muscular 31. Zahid did a solo run towards the byeline and hit an impeccable and powerful shot from a tight angle that no one would have thought of shooting from. The keeper could only stand and watch as the ball sailed as quick as lightning into his net one more time. 8-1.

The Slayers bench was demanding more playing time, wanting to score more goals for themselves and even goalkeeper 14. Ting Soon had calls from the bench for a substitution. The complacency of Team Slayers almost cost them of another conceded goal as several long clearances into the open Slayers half was undealt by the vanished defence. 14. Ting Soon had to come off his line to catch some loose balls while 4. Daryl made another sliding tackle, this time perfect, to deny a free running Ramozians winger a shot on goal while 7. Shawn and 16. Wei Ian came back to clear the loose ball up field.

Shouts of a positive goal difference from the Slayers bench was heard throughout the field and the new motivation found was used by 10. Zi Xiang who did some excellent footwork to fool 2 Ramozians defenders in their own box and sent another clinical finish low into the corner where the Ramozian keeper had no chance. 9-1. The keeper would definitely have backaches after picking the ball out of his own net 9 times, and would clearly want to forget this nightmare- The day when Team Slayers ran riot and scored 9 goals in a space of slightly more than an hour. Final score, Team Slayers 9, Ramozians 1.
