Anniversary

Yay, the blog has reached and exceeded its 50th post! This is the 51st post and shows how active our team is even though we go to different schools, do different things, and play separately. This is a tribute to those who contributed to this blog, even by tagging or popping by to see what s happening to this team stuck in Singapore and find out its home ground is going to be repaired.

Yep, that s right. Our supposed home ground, Dempsey Road field would be going under repair in the month of November if you didnt know. It should be repaired around late October to latest December according to its annual repairing of field plan. So when we get back to our home ground during the last month of the holiday, we should see a whole nice patch of green grass, nicely cut, goal posts repainted, lines redrawn, corner flags repaired, walkway to field clear of spider webs, and who knows what dangling from the surrounding trees. Pitch 1 and 2 are being repaired first at an earlier time and would end earlier than pitch 3 and 4, so it would be an alternative place to hold matches. So far, the cheapest available football field is Dempsey at $37/ 2hrs. And after all the repairs, haha, we will benefit from it. (Hmm, maybe the vending machine will be cleared of foreign substances, especially white stuff, at the displacing compartment.)

Since the Dempsey currently sucks, ulu, can drinks got bird s**t, field got so many patches of sand, lines all fading, we will have to change our home ground if we have a match before the field is repaired. Jeremy suggested we book an ITE field since it is the same price as Bukit Timah Field ($50) and would have better accessibilty. [it's a school for goodness sake] Most have grandstands and free water, water coolers, cleaning up facilites and everything that is good for us. Better facilities than Bukit Timah for the same price. Of course our matches must be in the day, or else we have to pay hundreds to on the bloody floodlights (the gigantic light bulbs 20 metres tall in every corner of a stadium). Yea, there will be proper subs bench. Jer again suggested the newly but havent opened ITE Bukit Panjang. We might be the first to use the field. Then ying lun was impressed with ITE Simei [fyi, it s in the east.] Of course no.11 was kidding. Who would want to go all the way to the other end of Singapore to play matches (except me)? Honestly, ITE Simei's field is good and grand as it is just built a year ago.

If you have any suggestions, post it or tag it. yes, Singapore is democratic. You can suggest where we can hold our matches for the time being or even permanently if Dempsey still sucks. But dun forget, Dempsey will always be cheaper.

What else? but formations

Jeremy and I again, analysed and decided to come up with another formation worth considering. Especially since the upcoming match, supposingly Team Sapphires, are 'beatable', we are allowed to play and tweak with formations to see which is the best. So in the match we will make quite many changes. If all goes wrong, it will be best to switch to traditional and safest 4-4-2. The new formation is this:

.................................LF.............RF
......................LAM...........................RAM
................................LDM.......RDM
.....................LB........LCB.....RCB.......RB
.........................................GK

It is simple and you should have seen some teams use before. Especially Brazil. 4-2-4. This is a 'cut in' formation. We realised many of us can do cut ins to shoot. Esp Jeremy and Kovan. They should work best and score goals when they cut in. Kovan will say Henry style. It is not very different from the previous formation, the one with 3 backs. This formation is pretty much the penetrating through the centre kind of attack, leaving the wings lots of space. Full backs can try to make the runs down the flanks to support attack as there are 2 CDMs to protect the defence.

Will be updating more soon, get on with the name thingy. At least the blog seem more alive now.

New Name?

Heard that some of us wanted to chanage the name of the team. Chronix? Few wanted but 1 disagreed. Bates? Looks like a hot name and many agree. If you are short of ideas of what words that are frequently seen in football teams, i have accumulated some second names from the EPL.
  • Rovers
  • Wanderers
  • Atheletic
  • United

These are the only obvious and nice ones. unless you want Hotspur? The first name you all slowly think. Not neccesary must add the word 'team' right. Just think of anything under the sun.. eh wait maybe beyond the sun. Like planet's moons? Titania, Titan, Ganymede? Or space shuttles? Apollo? Whatever it is. Think of something nice and hopefully everyone likes it. Bet those Red Devils will want United in the name. Oh ya thinking of our latest opponent, Team Sapphires, we can also use like gemstones, Agate, Diamond, Emerald, Garnet, Opal, Ruby, Topaz, Zircon? If anyone objects to the change in team name, or wants to offer a suggestion, you can tag or publish a post. thx, for now, Slayers who are slained.

Anything's Possible

It is getting boring again now that there are no matches up soon for us. So there is nothing much to talk about now and the blog is getting boring. Anyway, Jeremy and I met up to mug yesterday and we talked about some formations possible for our team. He even considered Chien Ming the present centreback as a striker, a targetman so that we can pump balls to him, let him hold it and he will bring the midfielders into play. I think that is quite useful considering the fact that we have been losing possesion after our goalkicks or when Jun Jie pumps it outfield. The problem is our midfielders dun stand in the centre of the field to receive the loose ball and the opponent easily gets it. I think most of us dun dare to head the ball when it s coming down to earth at maybe 10km/h? Physics law states Force= Mass x Acceleration. The ball will of course exert a large amount of force onto the head. But like what Ying Lun said, we should attack the ball, exert an opposing force and that will cut down the resultant force on our head. So, we should be brave (learn from Andy) and attack the ball, not let it bounce and give it to the opponent. Chien Ming can head, can hold and shield the ball, hence it will be an option worth considering. Also we discussed about a new formation created by me, although what Reuben suggested of keeping to simple formations like 4-4-2 because we are still adapting to our team mates, i think it is also important to choose a system that win games for us. We have been experimenting with quite a range of formations and they havent quite work out for us. The only successful formation was 3-5-2 with wing backs. The formation held Cashew to a 1-0 lead at half time. The formation jeremy and i thought was good is this:

......................................LF..............RF
.......................... LAM.......................... ..RAM
...............................................CM
....................................LDM..........RDM
............................LB...............CB..............RB
...............................................GK

This formation boosts wing play tremendously which we are lacking. But it means the fullbacks should be very fit to run up and down the flanks to assist in attacks. However, it will also mean the defensive midfielders should be extremely disciplined to stay back and anchor for the attacking players. When the fullbacks attack, there will be the centreback left on the last line of defence. This defender suitably should be a sweeper, and should know when to step up to activate the offside trap and when to stay back to sweep away any through balls. The sweeper or CB should be intelligent but does not need to be extremely fit.

If the attacking full back and CB cum sweeper defensive system does not work, we can always play the safer permanent back 3 system where all back 3s stay back all the while. However, the 2 defensive midfielders should alternate their supporting role in helping the CM to set up attacks, taking on the play maker role. One defensive midfielder should always be present in position just in case any counters are lauched while our players are still far upfield. This system helps boost attacking options on flanks, in the centre of the park and a partnership of 2 strikers to support each other. The CM should be creative and can easily take on the playmaking role.

You can tag your opinions on my views or publish a post on what you think is the best for the team, or else this blog will die soon without new posts. thx.

Upcoming Matches

We have a few opponents to play against AFTER our End of Year exams.
I suggest we play them in the following order.
1. Team Sapphires: Ytd, Yinglun and I went to "spy" on their training session at Regent Sec. They were divided into two predominant teams and trained by their 2 coaches. Their standard is slightly below us-no disrespect though. They have a pretty weak defence, with loopholes all over. You might even be able to dribble past 2 or 3 of them at a go. Their attack is totally different. I can sense that their attack has good chemistry between themselves and their midfielders so Team-Slayers defenders, be wary. Another thing, their corners are well worked but unfortunately for them they do not really have a "target man" in the box so we should be able to destroy their aerial attacks easily. Basically this team is easy to beat but whether we can do it is another matter. Forget bout the last two official games and bring a confident and win win mood into this match and the win is ours for the taking. The main reason why i chose this team for us to play first is because they are beatable and should help raise team morale before proceeding on to more challenging fixtures.

2. Cashewnuts: Intro not needed here. Those(ChienMing, Lucas, Wei Ian) that missed the 1st leg get your buddies to do the breakdown of Cashewnuts for you. This is a 2nd leg with the word REVENGE written all over it and will be played at a PROPER field with no screwed up referee. Anyway, we will have ChienMing and Lucas back and I believe both will significantly strengthen our porous defence with great effect. Next we have Wei Ian aka Mbates... He will be back to provide the much missed laughter and runs into the opponents half which help penetrate their defence. He will most likely be played on the wings and hopefully Wei Ian will throw some tackles in as well.

3. Team Khalifah: Another beatable team similar to Team Sapphires. Basically they are 101% beatable, maybe even thrashable. How do i know? Cos i was at one of their matches with Team Sapphires and it ended in a 1-1 draw. Crappy shit so there's no reason why we can't beat 'em if we can beat Team Sapphires. Go figure.

4. Team Bumblebees: The most challenging team of all that were mentioned. This is a seriously tough game. Mystery opponents who issued us a sudden challenge. Yeah they are unknown quality and they shittiest part is that we dont even know how they play. Anyway, with wins in the 3 matches-hopefully-and a thrashing of Team Khalifah, we should be able to get our act right, together with an improved team chemistry.

Good luck for end of years everyone. Mug hard for the next month and reward yourself with endless weeks of football trainings and matches. Haha, you especially. Yes you Daryl, you better convince your Dad with superb results.

Comments on match on 1/9

Cashew nuts!

For those who didn’t come because of certain commitments, yeah, we lost 5-0 ):
But as all other matches, I think we should take this in our stride and use this as a lesson learnt to improve ourselves. After all, this was for experience right?

Anyway a guess I wanna voice a few opinions, whether they are welcome or not. I’m probably one of the lousier players and I admit it so I’m not exactly in the best position to make comments, but heck, I’m gonna make them anyway.

Today started out a good day, although we were missing a few of our key players, we came out strong and forceful, weaving through their defense on a few occasions and getting close enough to get a good shot. Unfortunately, we dint make them. I think it looked as if we were giving them chance. O.o So they got a really stupid first goal in. not much we could have done about it, the defenders were doing their job and closed down on him pretty tight. I guess it was just being at the right place at the right time. So that was the first half in general. Everybody was still in the game and the score was 1-0. (p.s. this was as I remembered it, feel free to correct if you find anything wrong).

Now the second half is something to talk about. Injuries all around, vulgarities, fatigue and worst of all goals. Note the score so you would know what I mean. The defense started loosening up, the mid-fielders started slowing down and the strikers could have taken a water break. I think I heard Kovan saying that he still hadn’t touched the ball like 10 mins into the game. So that was pretty much it, keeper took the ball and pumped it up(1), midfielders couldn’t connect with the ball so the opponents picked it up and more or less strolled in till Daryl, Kovan(yes I said Kovan, he actually had to pull back to cover up!) or Ying Lun stopped them in their tracks(2). Then they would pummel the ball down the sides and we kept possession till the defense bulldozed us down(literally). Then they would whack it down for their midfield to pick up then wander in, resulting in a shot, 1, or getting tackled, 2. so other then the few bursts of energy, we were kept camping in our own half. Darn.

Defense: okay, Ying Lun was super in the first half. I guess. Very aggressive play, saving us from further humiliation. Daryl was also around to clear off any loose balls. But the others were kind of on off. We had quite a few poor clearances. Tip: time our kicks properly so the ball goes high and straight, if possible. We had some low clearances and some that went sideways, which went straight to the feet of the opposing strikers. Now that was scary. In this kind of situations people are expecting you to clear and have already moved off, leaving the goal wide open for them to take a shot. I guess we could try to work this out by realizing that it is the Midfielders job to connect with the ball. Defenders try to stay back and watch for the stray ones.

Another point. In defense, positioning is very important. Don’t just think that because you are in front of the striker so you have cut him off. If he notices that you have opened up a gap for him, you are done for. Make sure that you are always between him and the goal. I think that would help a lot.

Midfielders: hmm, today was a day of injuries so I guess you guys, were not really in a state to run. Unfortunately, running is all your position calls for. Make sure that you keep your stamina high because you never know when you might need that burst of speed. I guess if you want a rough gauge, think under 10 mins for 2.4, I think that shouldn’t be a problem for you guys but keep trying to improve on your stamina.

Another thing, I don’t think midfielders are there for getting close up for shots, that’s the striker’s job. Unless you want to take a far shot, I suggest you make the appropriate passes to the proper people for the job. (sorry guys, guess I kind of hogged.) its not much point trying to dribble through the whole defense when you know that there are people free. So remember, pass!

Strikers: Okay so I admit, the cashew nuts did play rather rough, so maybe you should start to bulk up? I don’t know, but one thing is sure, this was where we played our best, even though it wasn’t enough. We managed to thread in passes around their box, but our finishing was horrible. Remember guys, we’re here to score goals, if you don’t shoot, who will? Take a shot at every opportunity. If you miss, heck, at least you made the defense work. If you score, yaye! Everybody loves you. It’s a win-win situation, must as well go along with it.

Keeper: I believe Jun Jie has put in a lot into this game, we made some pretty good saves and I think his effort is commendable. However, the point of a keeper is because he can use his hands. We must make use of this advantage to its fullest potential. Go all out for the ball! Dive! Roll! Screw the striker! Whatever, the priority is to get the ball out of the zone. Do that and the game is ours.

Goal Kicks: I love the dropkicks! Well done, compared to the measly keeper on the other end. However the spotkicks were a different story. It seemed that on the end of every spotkick, the ball would just bounce once, untouched, into the chests of the opposing midfielders, leaving us with a mad scramble back to defense. Now I guess its okay at first but after a while it gets pretty irritating. Midfielders! Make sure you are in a position to get the ball! For a while, Ying Lun did the job for JJ, which was fine, but we can’t always rely on that can we? Midfielders this means more running for you but after all, its your job.

Free kicks: now we all know that this is Jeremy’s thing. No one else can do it like he can. So why not let him take the shot? If it’s on the left, tip the ball to the side so that it clears the wall, giving Jeremy the clear shot. If it’s on the right, don’t go for the goal, bring it into the box for the strikers or pass out the right for Jeremy. Don’t go whacking the ball into the keeper.

Freethrows: the referee was lenient on this area. We had a few incidents where the people were complaining about foul throw. We really need to work on this. Get the rules correct so that we can work on this.

Corners: another headache. Few of us can kick high and far enough to make it lethal. I suggest that we just pass it to some one nearby because he’ll be in a better position to do just anything, be it a pass of a shot.

Now I’ll just make some comments on the individual performances, if I’m wrong, I sincerely apologize. But if it’s true, I hope that you’ll make a little bit of effort to think through it. Remember, a little effort is still some effort.

4.Zi Han- was actively present along the wings, tried to break through the defense. Obviously not his day tho, still trying to get used to pitch soccer. Needs to work on stamina.
5. Terence- look out for your postitioning, make sure that you dun give the striker an open goal for a shot. Make sure you stick to your man and cut him off.
6. Zi Xiang- tried to make a few breaks, guess this is where speed would pay off. If you can work on that then we will be able to get a few shotss in via through passes.
7. Shawn- always remember ur position. Dun drift too far away and make sure you don’t leave a whole in ur wake.
8. Daryl- good clearances and commendable effort. Make ur clearances fast so that the strikers dun catch up with you.
9. Reuben- left early before the action began
10. Jeremy- creative player. Off form because of injury. But still able to make impact on the field.
11. Ying Lun- excellent replacement for CB. Did the necessary tackles though some were rather aggressive. Keep ur cool man.1
2. Jun Jie- made a few good saves, just when we thought all was lost. Keep it up
14. Kovan- made an effort to break through, remember though, there are other people in the field so soloing may not always be the answer.
16. Kamil- good runs in the first half, MIA second half due to injury
20.Andy- great improvement from previous meetings, went in for the ball and ran to cut off the opposition
21. Jethro- holds on to the ball for too long, does unnecessary tricks at high risk. Must pass more

Lastly, I think we sould all be open to I little criticism. Of you got something constructive to say, by all means go ahead! We wont improve unless we start to point out our mistakes.

I guess this is all I wanna say. Keep it up guys! Remember, the sky’s the limit!

Cheers!

Jethro

Report

Another match. Another loss. Another thrashing. Team Slayers played well in the first half. We did passing in midfield to the forwards and had few chances at goal. Leading the back line consisting of no. 8, 9 and 11 was Ying Lun who did well in countering Cashew's attack. The first goal came unexpectedly and undeservingly as the low cross from a Cashew corneron the left nutmeged Shawn and Ying Lun before landing perfectly for a Cashew striker to finish it low and hard past goalkeeper Jun Jie. Goal kicks and freekicks were made commonly to the left flank where Slayers' attack were neutralised by a very impressive Cashew right back and centreback captain, Glenn. The over enthusiastic Cashew defence took the ball off left winger Kamil and brought him down with a career threatening tackle that ended Kamil's match early. The injury kept him on the sidelines till the end of the match. In came Left back Andy to replace Kamil and Slayers switched to the traditional 4-4-2. The scoreline remained at 1-0 at halftime. Team Slayers had another blow at half time with cetre back cum left back Reuben leaving for personal reasons. From then on, the team had 0 available subs on the bench.

Second half started lively with Cashew making many attacks and quick counters were launched by Slayers usually with the ever powerful dropkick of goalkeeper Jun Jie. Terence replaced Reuben at left back and Andy shifted to right back. Central midfield partnership of captain Jeremy and attacking minded Jethro remained quite fruitless. However, left midfielder Zi Han held the ball well and passed it to keep the hopes alive for Slayers. Right attacking midfielder Shawn provided little service for strikers Zi Xiang and Kovan. Everything went well until centre back Ying Lun decided to move up to attacking midfield position. The gaping hole was realised by the Cashew attack and great defensive work by Andy and Daryl forced the attempt to a corner. Intelligent play by the Cashew corner taker took it quick and the overwhelming number of Cashew players in the box had the first touch of the curling cross into the box. The then bouncing ball in mid penalty area was half-volleyed beautifully into the top right corner by a Cashew striker giving Slayers keeper no chance at all. Morale dipped drastically in Team Slayers and soon striker Kovan became sick of the lack of service and became a centre back, forcing Daryl to right wing position. The lesser men in defence provided more numbers for attack and it soon paid off for a goal. A throw in by Daryl to Ying Lun gave the no. 11 lots of space to run towards goal and shoot from right penalty box. However, the intended shot shaved the upright and went out for a goalkick. Applause all over the field were heard after long shot king Jeremy shot from nearly half way line just over the bar. He also missed two free kicks earlier on by inches. It was clearly bad luck for Slayers as Kovan whacked the post in the first half. The makeshift defence was totally disorganised. Kovan moved back to attack and that made Daryl to be centre back once again. The back 3 of no. 20, 8 and 5 was not first choice and that soon proved right. A counter attack led by Cashew no. 9, Kavi penetrated the defence easily with 2 other wingers on either flank. A last ditch tackle by Daryl forced a severe cramp in the left calf and right hamstring. The injury allowed Kavi a clear run at goal and he slotted the ball low below the left of Jun Jie. Earlier injuries of Jeremy and Ying Lun did not affect them much. Shawn was forced to be a centreback, but in the end, Slayers' backline conceded another 2 goals from corners in the last 10 minutes. Powerful headers and shots were too much for the overly depended makeshift defence without star defender Chien Ming. Uncreative attack of Slayers made sure we did not score a single goal in our 3rd match. The services of midfield dynano Wei Ian and sublime defending of Lucas's left foot was sorely missed. Full-time, Cashew Cavaliers 5, Team Slayers 0.
